Description of Association

The Massachusetts Administrators for Special Education (ASE) is the lead organization representing the special education administrators in Massachusetts. ASE provides a variety of services to its members - conferences, newsletters, information briefs, and representation of the membership at the federal and state levels. More specifically, ASE provides leadership in advocating for appropriate provision of services to all children and youth in Massachusetts. ASE offers professional development opportunities for special education administrators and others interested in important issues in special education. ASE has joined forces with other state leadership organizations in order to better serve and represent the ASE membership.

Job Description, Executive Director of ASE

QUALIFICATIONS: 1. At least five years of successful administrative experience required, school or business organizational management, or executive director experience preferred.
2. Master's Degree required.
3. Thorough working knowledge of the special education regulations, laws and related policies systems.
4. A working knowledge of public policy systems.
5. Any alternative to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable to the ASE Executive Board.

ASE Board of Directors and the President of ASE

JOB GOAL:

In order to enhance the effectiveness of the ASE Board, develop, coordinate, plan, implement, communicate, supervise and evaluate ASE activities and initiatives; manage the daily operational needs of the association; provide leadership and guidance to the Executive Board; and assist in the continuous improvement of ASE services to its members.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operational
1.   Prepares the ASE Board agenda and accompanying material.
2. Manages and supervises the daily operations of the ASE office, including finances, membership, correspondence and communications.
3. Prepares and distributes the ASE Newsletter.
4. Researches and prepares ASE's position on critical issues for distribution to ASE members, the Department of Education, legislators, and other agencies and organizations.
5. Maintains the ASE website.
6. Prepares ASE conference agendas and schedules ASE conferences, confirms presenters, and tends to conference details.
7. Schedules the ASE Board meetings.
8. Develops, manages, and oversees the ASE budget.
9. Monitors ASE's finances and monthly spending.
10. Examines present ASE policies and procedures and recommends improvements.
11. Maintains and is familiar with the ASE By-Laws.
12. Maintains and is familiar with ASE policies and regulations.
13. Fulfills the duties of Executive Director as stated in the ASE By-Laws.
14 Assumes other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.

Communication
1. Maintains open and timely communication with the ASE President, Officers and Board.
2.   Identifies emerging special education issues and trends impacting special education practices and informs the ASE Executive Board.
3. Networks with other professional organizations.
4. Communicates with Department of Education administrative personnel and with legislators, periodically and as directed by the ASE Board.
5. Communicates effectively with the ASE membership.
6. Participates in State and interagency committee work, when directed.
7. Testifies at public hearings and legislative committees to ASE's position on issues, when directed.
8. Presents creative options to the ASE Board when it is confronted with operational, management or policy decisions.
9. Prepares a status and activity report for presentation at ASE Board meetings.
10. Updates the membership, during ASE conferences, regarding current special education issues and ASE activities.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

12 Month Position
Salary Range: $70K - $80K (inclusive of benefits; associated benefits will be discussed with final candidate.)
