The uterus is protected within the pelvis until roughly 12 weeks after which it rises to the level of the umbilicus at 20 weeks. The bladder is displaced upward as the uterus grows, making it an intraabdominal organ weak to harm. The uterine wall turns into thinner and the relative amount of amniotic fluid decreases with advancing gestation; these adjustments contribute to the potential of antagonistic placental or fetal effects. Potential sequelae of blunt trauma relate to characteristics of the drive and size of the uterus, and include placental abruption, uterine rupture, or even direct fetal damage. Although maternal threat of mortality (3%-4%) is decrease than for nonpregnant girls, the chance of fetal damage and demise is as high as 73%.
